The Battle of Saragarhi, fought in 1897 between 10,000 Afridi and Orakzai Pashtun tribesmen and 21 Sikh soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army, is chronicled in this book. Kesari was once intended to be a production cooperation between Salman Khan and Johar with Akshay Kumar playing the main role.

Kesari Movie Short Storyline
Ishar Singh is a havildar in the British Indian Army’s Sikh Regiment. He reports to a haughty British officer who believes all Indians are cowards and who is envious of Ishar Singh’s better combat abilities. The regiment is stationed in Gulistan Fort, which is on the line separating Afghan territory from the British-controlled area.
A married Afghan lady who has been picked by her family against her will to be her husband is once on the point of being killed by a group of Afghan tribesmen commanded by one Saidullah when the military is on a border patrol. The British officer declines to step in and save the lady.
Claiming that she is an Afghan national and does not dwell in British territory and that it is against British Raj policy to meddle in family problems involving tribal customs. Ishar Singh goes against his officer’s instructions to intercede, beat off the tribesmen, and rescue the woman by murdering her husband.
