Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and his family, which included his wife Phaguniya Devi (Radhika Apte) and son, resided in the 1960s in the tiny village of Gehlaur near Gaya, Bihar, India. To seek medical care in the nearby town of Wazirganj, individuals from his hamlet had to either climb over or go around a rugged mountain.
Manjhi made the decision to cut a road through the mountain when his pregnant wife slipped while attempting to traverse it one day and later died while giving birth to a daughter. Many referred to him as crazy when he first began hammering the hill, but it just strengthened his drive. Manjhi created a route that was 360 feet long, 25 feet deep in some spots, and 30 feet wide after 22 years of backbreaking labor.
2007 saw Manjhi’s passing. According to the epilogue of the movie, the government built a metalled road to Gehlaur in 2011—52 years after he began destroying the mountain, 30 years after he completed it, and 4 years after his passing. He fought the Indian government to build roads, hospitals, and other infrastructure in their community.
