Swades: We, the People is a 2004 Hindi-language drama movie that Ashutosh Gowariker co-wrote, directed, and produced. Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, and Kishori Ballal are the movie’s main actors, and Daya Shankar Pandey, Rajesh Vivek, and Lekh Tandon play minor parts.
The two episodes of the television show Vaapsi on Zee TV’s Yule Love Stories (1994–1955), in which Gowariker portrayed Mohan Bhargav, served as the basis for the story. The 2003 Kannada film Chigurida Kanasu, which was based on the novels of the same name by Jnanapith awardee K. Shivaram Karanth and Bapu Kuti by Rajni Bakshi, is said to have influenced the plot of the lead part establishing a tiny hydropower plant to generate energy.
Javed Akhtar wrote the lyrics, and A. R. Rahman created the melody and background soundtrack. On December 17, 2004, Swades was released in theatres to rousing acclaim from reviewers who praised the soundtrack, plot, script, and acting of Khan, Joshi, and Ballal. However, it turned out to be a financial flop at the box office. Swades Movie Storyline
A project manager for NASA’s global precipitation measurement (GPM) program from India, Mohan Bhargava is a non-resident of the United States. Mohan moved to the United States to continue his undergraduate education after his parents in India died in a vehicle accident. He never stops thinking about Kaveri Amma, a nanny who cared for him as a youngster at his home in Uttar Pradesh. Kaveri Amma moved into an elderly residence in Delhi after the passing of his parents, where she finally lost touch with Mohan. Mohan wants to travel to India and return to the United States with Kaveri Amma.
He takes a few weeks off and visits India as a result of the recent success of Phase I of his project. When he arrives at the retirement community, he discovers that Kaveri Amma no longer resides there and moved to the village of Charanpur a year ago. Mohan ultimately makes the decision to visit Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Mohan chooses to travel to the village in a recreational vehicle because of the concern that it may not have the necessary amenities. When he gets to Charanpur, he meets Kaveri Amma and hears how she came to live with Geeta when Mohan’s parents passed away.
In his younger years, he used to nickname Geeta “Gitli.” Geeta oversees a school in Charanpur and works arduously to enhance the locals’ quality of life via education. However, caste and religious views are the main factors that separate the community. Geeta is not pleased to see Mohan because she fears that he would leave her and her younger brother Nandan “Chiku” alone and take Kaveri Amma back to the United States.
Kaveri Amma informs Mohan that it is her duty to marry Geeta first and that she ought to do so. Geeta supports gender equality and women’s empowerment. This draws Mohan to Geeta, and he joins the effort to support her by promoting education among underprivileged groups and among girls. Nivaaran and Melaram, two locals Mohan befriends, lend their support to his cause. In addition, the kind village leader Dadaji becomes interested in Mohan.
